Tag Rugby Competition
On Tuesday 24th January 2012, St. Paul’s entered into a tag rugby competition at Royton and Crompton School. We do not have any rugby coaching at our school, so we had one practice session and turned up to the event hoping that our team would work out what to do fast!! The team was:
Billy Melia |
Dylan Hogan |
Kane Corry |
Myles Edmondson |
Matthew Berry |
Robert Berry |
Alec Leedale |
Adam Ford |
Unfortunately, Adam had tonsillitis and couldn’t come. At the start, we were told the rules and informed that the winners would go into the Greater Manchester School Games finals at the Etihad Stadium. The boys were very excited about this possibility, but very unsure how we would do with so little experience. The 11 schools were split into 3 groups and the results of our group matches were:

Score |
St. Paul’s v St. Richmond |
Won 2 – 1 |
St. Paul’s v Bare Trees |
Won 5 – 2 |
St. Paul’s v Hodge Clough |
Won 4 - 2 |
By now, the team were beginning to realise how good they were and getting more excited about the prospect of the Etihad Stadium. We were into the semi-final to play against Christchurch.

St. Paul’s v Christchurch |
Won 6 – 1 |
After winning the semi-final, we had the daunting prospect of playing against St. Joseph’s in the final. Lots of the boys from St. Joseph’s play for local rugby teams and they were the best team in the competition.

Lost 4 – 2 |
Unfortunately, we lost the final 4 – 2. At the end, the boys shook hands with the opposition and acknowledged that the best team had won. We then got a huge shock when Steve, who organised the competition, announced that the top two teams would be entered into the final and we were going to the Etihad after all!!!!!!
Well done to everyone who took part in the tag rugby competition; you played really well and were a credit to our school.
