God himself gave us us his word through the technology of written communication in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. We can actually use technology to glorify God if we use it with well and with a humble heart (Prov 22:29).

COMPUTING

 

Rationale

 

At St. Paul’s C.E. Primary School, we believe computing is a powerful tool that enables children to explore, create, communicate, and make a positive difference in the world around them. As technology continues to shape our lives, we are committed to ensuring that every child develops the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to thrive in an ever-changing digital world. Our computing curriculum is rooted in our Christian vision: “Together we Grow, Love to Learn, Shine and Make a Difference,” and inspired by the biblical teaching to “let your light shine before others” (Matthew 5:16). We encourage children to use their talents creatively, responsibly, and purposefully for the good of others.

 

We believe that every child, regardless of background, ability, or prior experience, has the right to access and enjoy computing. Our curriculum promotes an inclusive and supportive environment where all learners are encouraged to take risks, solve problems, think critically, and persevere when faced with challenges. Through programming, debugging, digital creativity, and online collaboration, children learn the value of resilience and understand that mistakes are an important part of learning and growth.

 

Inspired by the words, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13), we nurture children to become confident and resilient learners who are not afraid to explore new ideas and overcome difficulties. Computing provides opportunities for children to develop logical thinking, independence, teamwork, and innovation while learning how to stay safe and responsible in the digital world.

At St. Paul’s, computing is not simply about using technology; it is about empowering every child to become confident, resilient problem-solvers who can make a meaningful difference.

 

Intent

Our Computing curriculum aims to:

  • Enable all children to develop confidence, curiosity, and enjoyment through active and engaging computing experiences
  • Foster a lifelong interest in technology, innovation, and digital learning through rich and varied opportunities
  • Develop practical computing skills, including programming, problem-solving, logical thinking, digital creativity, and online communication
  • Encourage resilience and perseverance by teaching children to debug, reflect, and learn from mistakes as part of the learning process
  • Reflect the values of respect, friendship, responsibility, and service, helping children to collaborate effectively and use technology positively and ethically
  • Celebrate diversity and expose pupils to a wide range of technologies, digital careers, cultures, and experiences from around the world
  • Include and celebrate all children by offering varied and accessible ways to participate, explore, and succeed in computing
  • Provide inclusive opportunities for pupils with SEND to thrive both academically and personally through adapted and supportive approaches
  • Promote safe, responsible, and respectful use of technology, preparing children to become positive digital citizens
  • Support social and emotional development through teamwork, communication, creativity, and reflective learning

 

Implementation

We currently use the NCCE Teach Computing programme of study to support the teaching of Computing at St. Paul’s. The curriculum is a comprehensive collection of materials produced to support teaching and it encompasses 12 pedagogical principles.

We have adapted our computing curriculum building it around key concepts that develop vocabulary, understanding, and opportunity through collaborative, hands-on learning. Children build knowledge by revisiting prior learning, exploring new ideas, and applying their understanding through practical, project-based activities. Teaching is supported through modelling, structured lessons, and varied scaffolding to ensure all learners can succeed and be challenged appropriately. We encourage pupils to work together, discuss ideas, and solve problems while misconceptions are identified and addressed through formative assessment. Abstract concepts are made meaningful through real-world contexts, coding exploration, and hands-on experiences using technology such as circuits and micro:bits. Regular opportunities to read, analyse, and create programs help deepen understanding and develop confident, resilient, and independent computational thinkers.

 

Impact

The impact of our Computing curriculum at St. Paul’s is seen in the confidence, curiosity, resilience, and digital understanding of our pupils. Children leave St. Paul’s equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate and contribute positively to an ever-changing technological world.

They:

·        Participate actively and enthusiastically in computing lessons and digital learning opportunities across the curriculum

·        Develop strong problem-solving, logical thinking, and computational skills through programming and practical challenges

·        Demonstrate resilience and perseverance by learning to debug, adapt, and improve their work independently and collaboratively

·        Express themselves creatively through digital media, coding, design, and technology-based projects

·        Use technology safely, respectfully, and responsibly, showing an understanding of how to be positive digital citizens

·        Show respect for the ideas and contributions of others while working collaboratively to solve problems and create digital content

·        Leave St. Paul’s with positive experiences of computing and the confidence to continue exploring technology and innovation in the future

 

We celebrate progress in computing through practical outcomes, problem-solving, pupil reflection, and teacher observation. Assessment is ongoing and reflects each child’s individual learning journey, valuing creativity, perseverance, collaboration, and growth alongside technical understanding.

Most importantly, computing at St. Paul’s nurtures confident, inclusive, and resilient learners, encouraging every child to “let their light shine” (Matthew 5:16) through creativity, curiosity, and innovation.
