Hola todos!

Rationale

At St. Paul’s CE Primary School, we believe that learning a language is a gift that opens doors to new cultures, experiences, and ways of understanding the world. Spanish is taught as a vibrant and inclusive subject that encourages communication, curiosity, and confidence. Rooted in our Christian vision, “Together we Grow, Love to Learn, Shine and Make a Difference,” and inspired by “Letting your light shine” (Matthew 5:16), our Spanish curriculum enables every child to develop their voice, build resilience, and celebrate their God-given potential.

Our Spanish curriculum is grounded in the belief that every child, regardless of background, ability, or prior experience, has the right to access and enjoy language learning. We are committed to a practical, engaging, and inclusive approach where children learn through active participation — speaking, listening, singing, reading, writing, and exploring Spanish culture together. We provide a supportive and joyful environment where all children, including those with additional needs, are encouraged to Shine.

Language learning is not a privilege for a few, but an entitlement for all. By making Spanish an active and accessible part of school life, we empower every child to communicate with confidence, appreciate diversity, and flourish as global citizens.

Overview

Spanish is woven into the fabric of school life at St. Paul’s. From classroom learning to collective worship, from cultural celebrations to cross-curricular experiences, Spanish brings our community together through communication, understanding, and shared celebration. It is a vibrant and valued part of life at St. Paul’s. Our progressive curriculum develops children’s language knowledge and intercultural understanding while nurturing their spiritual, emotional, and social growth. It provides opportunities for creativity, confidence, and collaboration, including working alongside other schools within the Trust.

Intent

Our Spanish curriculum aims to:

  • Enable all children to find joy and confidence through active language learning and communication
  • Foster a lifelong love of languages through rich, varied, and engaging experiences
  • Develop practical language skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing through active engagement with vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and conversation
  • Reflect the values of respect, friendship, perseverance, and service, helping children listen to and communicate effectively with others
  • Celebrate diversity and expose pupils to the language, cultures, and traditions of the Spanish-speaking world
  • Include and celebrate all children, offering varied ways to participate and succeed
  • Provide accessible and inclusive opportunities for pupils with SEND to thrive linguistically, socially, and emotionally
  • Support social and emotional development through collaboration, communication, cultural understanding, and reflection

Implementation

Spanish is taught biweekly in KS2 through a practical, progressive curriculum that allows children to learn language through active participation and real-life communication.

Our approach includes:

  • Regular speaking and listening opportunities across the school, both in lessons and through everyday interactions
  • Use of songs, rhymes, games, and storytelling to develop pronunciation, fluency, and confidence
  • Interactive activities and movement-based learning to support memory, engagement, and enjoyment
  • Opportunities for role play, conversation, and collaborative tasks to encourage creativity and self-expression
  • Exposure to a diverse range of Spanish-speaking cultures, developing vocabulary, understanding, and appreciation of the wider world
  • Use of an accessible and engaging scheme of work to structure learning, while tailoring lessons to our school’s context and values
  • Adapting lessons to meet the needs of all learners through multisensory activities, visual supports, repetition, scaffolded tasks, and collaborative group work

Spanish is also enriched through cultural celebrations, themed days, cross-curricular learning opportunities, and collaboration with other schools within the Trust.

Children with additional needs are supported through differentiated activities, inclusive teaching approaches, and carefully adapted resources to ensure all pupils can participate, communicate, and succeed confidently.

Impact

The impact of our Spanish curriculum at St. Paul’s is seen in the confidence, enthusiasm, and growing language skills of our pupils.

They:

  • Participate actively and willingly in Spanish lessons, cultural activities, and wider school experiences
  • Develop strong speaking and listening skills alongside an increasing understanding of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation
  • Express themselves with growing confidence and communicate in another language
  • Show respect for different cultures, traditions, and the contributions of others
  • Leave St. Paul’s with positive experiences of language learning and a readiness to continue exploring languages and the wider world
  • Develop curiosity and appreciation for global citizenship through engaging and enriching experiences

We celebrate progress in Spanish through speaking activities, practical tasks, self-reflection, and teacher observation.

More importantly, we value the confidence, curiosity, and sense of connection that language learning brings to our school community.

Assessment is ongoing and reflects each child’s individual language-learning journey. Most importantly, Spanish at St. Paul’s nurtures each pupil’s light, encouraging them to shine in their own unique way.
